Sand filtration systems (quartz granules)

Sand filtration is a process that consists of the removal of suspended solids by passing fluids through a filter bed. The filters can operate at atmospheric pressure or higher.

The pressure filter consists of a device with a cylindrical body and two pseudo-elliptic convex ends, constructed in welded carbon steel and painted.

The filter medium may consist of quartzite, anthracite or pyrolusite depending on the fluid treated. The filter is designed and constructed according to PED/ASME requirements for pressurised equipment.

The following accessories are situated within the filter:

  • A thick perforated plate that supports the filter media.
  • A set of specially designed nozzles fitted onto the plate to prevent leakage of filter media and ensure the uniform distribution of water during operation and backwashing.
  • A drainage system with a dedicated pipe for material detained by the filtration unit.

The filter is equipped with:

  • Service pipework;
  • Manholes for loading granules and routine inspections;
  • Pressure gauges on inlets/outlets;
  • Differential pressure switch in stainless steel.

The filtration system is washed regularly with water and a countercurrent air flow.

Management of the filtration system is fully automated and controlled by a PLC.
